"Year of the = Fish" Set to=20 Open in SeattleA Cinderella = Story Goes=20 Asian StyleRead = Prost=20 Amerika's reviewTheir press release describes it as follows: In this modern-day = adaptation of Cinderella, newcomer David Kaplan transposes the = fairytales=20 archetypical characters to a vibrant urban setting: a massage = parlor in=20 New York=92s Chinatown specializing in happy endings. An = optimistic young=20 girl travels alone to New York City where she hopes to earn money = to send=20 home to her ailing father. Expecting work in a beauty salon, the = girl is=20 instead delivered into the hands of her father=92s distant cousin, = an=20 embittered woman who runs a seedy massage parlor. The girl = surrenders her=20 passport as collateral for her debt and is informed of her duties. = When=20 she refuses to do the requisite sex work, the girl accepts her = fate as the=20 operation=92s browbeaten servant, her only solace a magical = goldfish given=20 to her by a sidewalk fortuneteller. Sprinkled with fantasy, romance and suspense, "Year of the = Fish" is=20 presented in a delicately layered animation style that evokes a = painting=20 come to life. The film=92s first-rate ensemble cast includes Ken = Leung=20 ("Lost", "X-Men 3", "Rush Hour"), Tsai Chin ("The Joy Luck Club"), = acclaimed Broadway veteran Randall Duk Kim ("The Matrix = Reloaded"), the=20 upcoming "Dragonball"), and introduces An Nguyen. Impact of Film on Local Economy = Could be=20 Boost for Washington Film Oregon Alliance today released = figures from=20 the Oregon Governor's Office of Film and Video (GOFV) that show = the impact=20 of film on the local economy stretches into rural areas. This = should come=20 as useful ammunition to Washington State Film Officials who can = show that=20 a successful film industry can benefit all parts of the state, = rural and=20 urban.According to the GOFV, the economic impacts attributed to the = film and=20 video industry are mostly concentrated in the Portland = metropolitan area,=20 but between 2002 and 2007, the industry has grown faster outside = of=20 Portland than in the city itself. Between 2002 and 2007, the = economic=20 activity benefiting more rural areas of the state has grown. 24.9 = % of the=20 total income from film impacted on rural areas, a 60.1% increase = from=20 2002. The rise in employment benefits was even higher with 35.4% = of the=20 employment helping areas outside metropolitan Portland. This is a = 214.4%=20 increase on 2002. Stan Roach, the FOA's Vice President said "the FOA is = developing a=20 searchable online "Locations Library" that will showcase the = Central=20 Oregon region's abundant and unique filming locations. FOA's image = library=20 will include current digital still photos as well as video footage = with=20 production notes and other information that will help cut the time = and=20 cost of finding locations. The objective is to "showcase" the = region so=20 more decision makers can explore Central Oregon easily and make = decisions=20 more quickly on where to locate a film."
IFP Accepting=20 Applications for IFP/Seattle Spotlight AwardsAward Was Large Step on Journey for = One=20 Seattle Filmmaker ![]() Heather and Ixaac "Winning the IFP/Spotlight Award allows us to treat Betty like = we're=20 making a feature. We spent months on script development knowing = we'd be=20 shooting on 35mm with some really intense material and wanting to = get it=20 right. We did a still photo shoot with Port Townsend actress = Heather=20 Poulsen, exploring the visual landscape. This is a character = driven story.=20 We know that one sentence in the script, "she spits out the little = white=20 pill," might be one of the best moments on screen; but only = because we're=20 shooting on film. Even with all the incredible magic one can = create=20 editing, nothing compares to the human face captured on film." This week, "My Time With Betty" launched a brand new souped up = website.=20 Heather explains that this is not just vanity but an important = step. "We=20 just launched our website. It's true, a good website helps a film. = We=20 obviously need to raise money, so we wanted to put something out = there to=20 show what we are capable of, but I think of a website as an = extension of a=20 filmmaker's vision and voice.
